How Bad is Sprawl in Pennsylvania?
Since suburbanization took hold after World War II, Pennsylvania has converted more than 4 million acres of farmland and other natural lands to development. That is an area larger than the states of Connecticut and Rhode Island combined. At the same time, (from the 1950 to 2000 census reports) our population grew by less than 17%. Rather than developing land to accommodate our need for a growing population and economy, we are merely shifting our existing population around from place to place.
